Finding the best procedure to fill in a gap and support missing teeth can be challenging, but we are here to help.

Understanding What Bridges Are

Dental Bridge being placed by Ann Arbor Dentist at Embree Dentistry. There are several variations of bridges, but in its most basic definition, a bridge is a team effort of your teeth and false teeth to “bridge” a gap created by a missing tooth. Generally, in adults, a fixed bridge is used. This has a false tooth fused to two others which are crowns on the adjacent teeth surrounding the gap where the missing tooth was. These fixes are permanent, and although removable options do exist, it is agreed that these are temporary fixes to a permanent problem.

Bridges Are Not Just for Adults

Teens sometimes find themselves missing permanent teeth as well. This kind of issue poses a problem as their jaws have not always fully matured. In this type of scenario, a removable partial denture is often recommended as it is easy to take care of and difficult to detect. However, when a bridge is deemed necessary, we use a variation of the bridge, which does not involve implants, but instead inserts a false tooth that bonds with surrounding teeth. This ensures that the false tooth stays in place without damaging the growing jaw. Though more costly than the denture, this option lasts longer and is far more comfortable.

Bridges Are Very Durable

Fixed dental bridges have a decent life expectancy. If you take good care of your mouth, go in for regular checkups, and take good care of them, they can last upwards of fifteen years. With excellent care, they can last even longer.

The Process

Bridges take several visits. The first one after deciding which route to go is where we will prepare the adjacent teeth. We will remove a small amount of enamel to take the impression so the crowns for these teeth can be made, and the false tooth will fit securely. Then, while the bridge is being made, a temporary bridge will be installed. When you come back after that, your bridge will be ready and installed, after being checked and adjusted to ensure it fits well. After a couple of weeks, the device is permanently cemented.

Embree Dentistry has years of experience in all varieties of implant and bridge work, both cosmetically and restoratively.
