What Is a Dental Implant?A dental implant is a fixture that is installed in your mouth into your jaw to restore the function and integrity of your teeth and mouth after the extraction or the loss of a tooth. When the implant is fully integrated with the jaw bone, which can take up to a few months, a crown is fabricated and is placed on the top of the fixture to replace the missing tooth.
Embree Dentistry refers implant placement to an Oral Surgeon or Periodontist, then you return to our office for implant crown fabrication.
What Is the Implant Procedure?Luckily, dental implant surgery is an outpatient procedure. This means that you can go home and relax once the surgery is complete. On the day of your appointment, you will be given a local anesthetic. Then, when prepared for surgery, the problematic tooth is removed (if it has not been already). Then the Oral Surgeon or Periodontist will focus on your jaw, grafting it until it is ready to take the implant.
When the graft heals, you will be ready for the implant, and it will be inserted into your jawbone. Whether done when you are getting the implant placed or after a several month healing period, an abutment will be placed on the top of the implant, which is where the crown, or false tooth, will sit. From there, it is time to heal. The next step is placing the crown on the post. Molds will be made of your mouth and teeth to make a false tooth that will be the perfect fit, and it will be installed when your implant has healed enough and is ready.
