How Saliva Helps You Fight Back Against Cavities

Posted on 3/15/2019 by Sandra Embree
How Saliva Helps You Fight Back Against CavitiesYour saliva is a very important part component of a healthy mouth. The more saliva you have, in most instances, the healthier your mouth is. This is because the saliva is able to wash away more debris and bacteria, plus flood your teeth with nutrients, than those who have lower quantities of saliva.

It is very important, and you need to make sure that you pay attention to how much is in your mouth. If you end up struggling with dry mouth, there are things that can be done to help protect your teeth and other oral tissues.

Saliva is a Superhero

Saliva is literally a superhero to your mouth. It is essential to your mouths' health and survival. First, it keeps all of the tissues of your mouth moist, which is essential for them to remain healthy. Next, it washes away particles of food left behind after you eat. During the night, your saliva coats your teeth to keep bacteria at bay as much as possible, so the bacteria do not have the chance to eat away at the enamel of your teeth.

Finally, your saliva also takes nutrients out of your food and cover your teeth. As you eat and brush, you wash away some of the minerals of your teeth. Your saliva replaces those lost minerals to help your teeth get, and stay, healthy. This process, called remineralization, is what keeps your teeth able to withstand the forces required to chew up your food.
